From Beginner to Advanced: My Journey from NTRP 2.5 to 4.5 (and How You Can Too)
In 2006, I was overweight, unhealthy, and completely new to tennis. My NTRP rating was a humble 2.5, and I had no idea how much this sport would change my life. Today, in 2024, I’m a solid 4.5 player. My secret? I played a lot of tennis and said “yes” to every opportunity to be on the court.
How I Improved So Quickly
Here’s what worked for me:
-
Joining USTA Teams
Playing on teams gave me regular matches, practice, and a supportive community. -
Cardio Tennis
A fun, high-energy workout that improved my fitness and footwork. -
Private Lessons & Clinics
Private lessons helped me refine my technique, and clinics provided affordable group instruction. -
Recreational Play
Pickup games and hitting sessions allowed me to practice what I learned in lessons.
The more I played, the better I got. Each match and practice session taught me something new.
Tennis in 2024: More Accessible Than Ever
Tennis has evolved significantly since I first started. There are now endless ways to get involved, whether you’re on a budget or have resources to spare.
- Apps like "Play Your Court" and "Tennis Pal" connect players.
- Community programs offer affordable lessons and leagues.
- Meetup groups and platforms like Eventbrite make finding tennis events easy.
In Los Angeles, organizations like the Los Angeles Tennis Association and PlayTennisLA.com offer incredible resources for players of all levels.
Want to Improve Quickly?
- Big Budget? Invest in private lessons, clinics, and quality gear.
- Tight Budget? Check out community programs, free events, and YouTube tutorials.
- Most Importantly: Play as much as you can. Repetition is key.
My Advice? Just Start Playing.
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to level up, the path to improvement is simple: show up, play often, and embrace the journey.
